The main functions of the Musical Instruments Repair Department

To carry out maintenance and current repair, owned by the Conservatory, of pianos (upright and grand pianos).

Routine maintenance includes:

1. Tuning the piano to standard pitch a₁ = 440 Hz (if two instruments are in one room, they must be in exact unison).
2. Intonation to equalize volume and timbre throughout the range.
3. Fine adjustment of all piano mechanisms and systems.
4. Cleaning dust and debris from the piano body, mechanics, and soundboard.
5. Current repairs: replacement of broken strings or parts, damping or pedal mechanisms (up to 20 faults per instrument), manufacture of up to 10 bass strings per instrument on the Conservatory’s string winding machine.
